by on28 April 2011

Equipment installation starts in June
The first workers at Globlalfoundries’ new fab in Malta, New York State, are expected to move in sometime in May.

About 300 office staff will move in to the office wing of the new facility, production is still a long way off. The company will start installing production equipment this June, but this tedious process will take quite a while and production is slated to start in July next year. Next month, Globalfoundries will also break ground on a 220,000-square-foot administrative building.

Once completed, the fab will employ more than 1,000 workers, but for the time being it is operating with a skeleton crew of 400 employees, mostly administrative staff and locals. Globalfoundries has already started looking for prospective technicians in nearby universities.
