Wants to make larger panels

Sony
plans to spend $203.5 million to develop technology to make medium to large organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels.

Currently, it is only commercially possible to make small OLED panels that use organic, or carbon-containing, compounds that emit light when electricity is applied. The panels are much more versatile than current technology because they don't need backlighting and are slimmer and more energy-efficient.

According to Reuters, the money is the first serious investment in moving the technology forward to a point where it can tackle the more popular larger screen technology of LCD and Plasma.
