BerliOS killed off

Not enough cash support
Euro Open Source operating system BerliOS is being killed off in December.

Short for "Berlin Open Source" the OS was founded by FOKUS in a bid to coordinate the different interest groups in thefield of open source software (OSS) and to assume a neutral coordinator function. But according to the project's site, its days are numbered.  As an European, non-proprietary project BerliOS pursued the goal to support the various open-source players and provide a neutral mediator function, the site said.

In 2011 over 4710 projects have been hosted on BerliOS, with 50,000 registered users and over 2.6 million file downloads each month. The group said it was proud that it brought the idea of an OSS repository to Europe. However since then the concept has taken off and there are many good alternatives.

Fraunhofer FOKUS has only few opportunities to operate a repository like BerliOS and without follow-up financing, or with sponsors or partners taking over the repository it is doomed. It is not possible to put the project on a sustainable financial basis and sponsors or partners would not touch it.
