U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary, Gordon England, claims that cyber warfare is one of the major challenges faced by U.S. defense agencies at the moment.

“Cyber warfare is already here,” said England while addressing the audience at the Veterans of Foreign Wars conference. A task force in charge of U.S. efforts to protect itself from cyber threats has already been established at the behest of President Bush.

He cited the data-flooding attacks against Estonia last Spring as a prime example of the potential threat faced by developed countries. The attacks wreaked havoc on Estonia's Web, even forcing its largest bank to shut down its online banking network. England believes that this clearly indicates how a developed nation's reliance on technology can easily be turned into a vulnerability.

The major concern is that states as well as non-state elements might be able to launch devastating attacks against the U.S. tech based infrastructure with near total impunity.
