Could be integrated ito washing machines, air conditioners

Broadcom has unveiled its new Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) platform. The new module allows easier development effort and as well as simplifying the implementation of Wi-Fi connectivity in an array of consumer devices, especially those with no current networking support.

The Wi-Fi module features the Broadcom's BCM4319 wireless LAN MAC/baseband/radio, an embedded processor and unique "self-hosted" Wi-Fi networking library and software application stack.  This combination allows manufacturers to easily integrate wireless connectivity into any MCU based consumer product. WICED-based modules enable the addition of secure, interoperable Wi-Fi functionality via a simple serial port using a basic command set that does not require any significant changes in product micro-controller architectures.

Some of Broadcom's ideas in creating the platform include integrating it into devices such as washing machines and air conditioners, where users can monitor energy consumption and control the products either at home or remotely. WICED modules can be easily designed into portable consumer electronics like digital cameras and audio products for file sharing and access to internet-based storage and applications.  Due to the low power requirements and small size, WICED solutions can be built into sensors and monitors for remote and cloud-based healthcare, fitness and security capabilities.
