Barns & Noble takes on Amazon with cheaper Nook

by on22 February 2012

$199 with less storage and memory

Barns & Noble has introduced a new, stripped down version of its Nook tablet and it clearly has Amazon’s Kindle Fire in its sights.

The new version is priced at just $199, rather than $249, and it packs 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage, whereas the original version boasts 1GB and 16GB. This puts the $199 Nook neck and neck with the Kindle Fire, which features a nearly identical spec.

The 7-inch Android tablet market is heating up and according to estimates the Nook and Kindle Fire accounted for 21 percent of the overall tablet market in Q4, which is even more impressive when you take into account that they were not widely available and launched mid-quarter.

In addition, Barns & Noble slashed the price of its Nook Color e-reader to $169.
