Google Play guns for foothold in content market

by on07 March 2012

Cloud based all-in-one content hub

Google is hoping to seize a chunk of the ever expanding content market with the introduction of its latest G-service, Google Play.

Google Play is a cloud-based content hub, offering users quick access to movies, music, apps and books. Basically it gobbled up Google Music, Android Market and Google eBookstore, but Google is now also offering movie rentals through the new service.

The new movie rental service should compete with iTunes and Amazon’s Instant Video, while the music section is basically Google Music with a rebrand on top. Aside from the movie service, Google Play does not seem to bring anything new to the table, but the whole idea behind it seems to have more to do with branding rather than anything else.

Google Play will bring Android Market, Google Music and Google eBookstore under a single brand, taking a cue from Apple’s iTunes. The real question is what took so long?
