IDC expects sluggish PC sales throughout 2012

Windows 8 and Ultrabooks should help

According to IDC beancounters, the global PC market will expand by about five percent in 2012. As many as 383 million PCs are expected to ship this year.

The latest IDC report concluded that Q1 shipments were stronger than expected and there is also a hope Windows 8 and Ultrabooks will generate additional demand.

"Consumer sentiment could be revived with UltraBook or Ultrathin systems provided the right price is reached," said analyst Jay Chou. Chou also believes that more price cutting in the Android arena could free up some money for PC purchases.

However, growth is still relatively slow compared to pre-recession years. The PC market is not expected to rebound for at least the next few quarters, but at least it will keep growing. IDC expects shipments to reach 413 million units in 2013, 491 million units in 2015 and 528 million units in 2016.
