Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University has filed a lawsuit against tech giant Apple, alleging that the iPhone 4S infringes on two speech recognition patents.

The university filed the lawsuit with the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and it is seeking a permanent sales ban on all things Siri, as well as retroactive damages. The amount of damages has not been determined yet.

The patents, dating back to 2002, cover various aspects of speech recognition, such as determining the similarity between fragments of speech, using timing of speech frames to recognize speech and using a modular design to divide speech processing into four modules.

Apple is expected to base its defense on the fact that the patents were printed on rectangular paper.
