Modern futuristic combat comes to Wake Island in Beta

The public beta for the 1.50 patch for Battlefield 2142 officially starts today, and it weighs in at just short of 170MB. The 1.50 update is perhaps the most anticipated patch that 2142 players have ever waited for because of the introduction of the famous “Wake Island” map into the 2142 universe.

The opening of the 1.50 update beta also marks the first time that DICE has included community created maps and made them part of an official release. The Wake Island map conversion was handled by the Sir Community. In addition to Wake Island, the 1.50 update also features a new map called “Operation Shingle” which was created by Jason Brice.

Beyond the two new maps, a new “No Vehicles” option has been added to several maps. In addition, “game casters” will like the fact that they have separated the commander’s voice/volume from the sound effects, which allows game casters to keep the explosions and gun fire without the commander interrupting the broadcast. In addition, several other bug fixes are included in this patch. DICE has also made some non-specific changes to curb the rampant cheating in 2142.

DICE intends to the run the public beta for 1.50 until around the end of this month. If all goes well, they hope to have a release version of the 1.50 update before the end of the May, if not, additional revisions and fixes will be made and perhaps another round of public beta testing, if necessary, before the official release of 1.50.

For those of you that wish to apply the 1.50 update, we strongly suggest that you make a backup copy of your 2142 directory before applying the 1.50 beta update. If DICE happens to be listening, many Battlefield 2142 players are excited about Wake Island; now if we could only get you to bring “Market Garden” to the 2142 universe, as well.
