The days of OMAP powered phones and tablets are numbered. Texas Instruments is planning to shift its focus on embedded markets rather than the highly competitive mobile market.
As a result, the company will cut about five percent of its workforce, nearly 1,700 souls. The move will cut TI’s annual costs by about $450 million by the end of 2013.
However, before Texas Instruments calls it quits, we should get to see the OMAP 5, possibly its last chip designed with the consumer market in mind.
First OMAP 5 products should show up in early 2013 and they should be rather competitive. OMAP 5 chips use A-15 cores clocked at up to 2GHz and backed by PowerVR SGX544 graphics. Texas Instruments might be leaving the market, but it’s doing so with a bang.
