ITC Judge backs Apple against Google

by on19 December 2012

Motorola patent can’t be asserted

Google's Motorola Mobility unit cannot assert a patent against Apple which is related to a sensor that stops phone users from dialling wrong numbers on touchscreen devices.

US trade judge Thomas Pender has ruled the Motorola patent invalid. The ITC is a US trade panel that investigates patent infringement involving imported goods. It is popular with patent trolls because it makes up its mind quickly and can stop the importation of products into the US.

So far the ITC has favoured Apple. In August, the commission found that Apple had not violated three other Motorola patents, and ordered Pender to further examine the touchscreen sensor patent. Now he has made his ruling the full committee can make up its own mind.
