Nvidia fixes security flaw

New driver released over the weekend

Graphics card maker Nvidia has released a new driver update to fix a particularly nasty security flaw.

The vulnerability was found in the Nvidia Display Driver service over Christmas by UK researcher Peter Winter-Smith. It allowed an attacker to gain super-user access to any system running the vulnerable driver software. The vulnerability allows a remote attacker with a valid domain account to gain super-user access to any desktop or laptop running the vulnerable service.

It was dubbed as a risk to organisations because it allowed attackers with a low-privileged account to gain super-access to their own system, which is always a bad thing, or to give the company a kick in the remote vectors. Driver version 310.90 addresses other bugs and brings performance increases for games and applications for a number of GPUs including the GeForce 400/500/600 Series. Results will vary depending on your GPU and system configuration, Nvidia said.
