Sony is claiming that its latest speakers might be the size of golf balls but can turn out a top-notch home-theater sound system.
The Home Theater System HT-IS100 will go on sale in Japan next month. They measure just 1.7-inches on each side and will cost $870 for five golf ball-sized speakers, as well as a bigger, 17-inch tall box for the amplifier and subwoofer.
No date or price has been given for sales in North America and Europe. Sony claims that the miniaturization is radical and can mimic the performance of much bigger speakers. The system connects to TVs, Blu-ray disc recorders, Sony's PlayStation 3 video game consoles and other gadgets, Sony said.
