The U.S. government is investigating whether Chinese officials copied the contents of a government laptop computer during a visit to China by Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. According to AP, the data was used to hack into Commerce computers.

Chinese spying was believed to have occurred when a laptop was left unattended during Gutierrez's trip to Beijing for trade talks in December. Gutierrez is refusing to comment because the incident is being investigated. But the story seems to think it unlikely that there was any data on Gutierrez's computer that would have given them access to Commerce department computers.

He said that the department had rules in place, and procedures that people go through before they travel.
