Wikipedia culls PR sock-puppets

Writers paid to present facts

Wikipedia launched an attack in its war against PR sock puppets writing nice things about their clients on the online encyclopaedia.

Executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation Sue Gardner said that the site just blocked or banned more than 250 user accounts. Wikipedia has spent a year investigating these sock puppet schemes. There were companies out there who were paid to edit Wikipedia pages for its clients and manage them.

Wackypedia has always had a few problems with editors who really knew sod all but were touting themselves as experts. In 2007, a Wikipedia editor who claimed to have a PhD in theology edited thousands of articles about canonical law until it was discovered he was a 24-year-old who was using Catholicism for Dummies as his primary source.
