NTT wants to buy two U.S. cloud computing firms for $1 billion combined.

The company has its eye on Virtela Technology so that it can offer data services globally without licensing cables and lines in individual markets. Virtela provides services to corporate clients in more than 190 countries through local partnerships. The name on the other company has not been identified yet, but there is expected to be a press conference soon.

NTT Communications, which operates data centres in Hong Kong and Britain, aims to double revenues from cloud services as it grapples with declining revenue from voice services.
