At least in Taiwan

Acers new 16:9, rather than 16:10, 24in display has just hit the online retail market in Taiwan. The peculiar size is supposedly something we can expect to see more of in the future, as the panel makers wants to move away from 16:10 panels, as the yield isn't as good as with 16:9 panels.

So what does this mean to the end user? Well, for one, lower resolution, as Acers new 24in display "only" manages to do 1,920x1,080, rather than 1,920x1,200 found on most 24in LCD monitors on the market today.

This might not seem like a bid deal on a big display like this, but if the panel makers decide to take this move to smaller and lower resolution panels, we have a feeling it's not going to be popular, as you'll end up with very wide displays with very little horizontal space.

The Acer P244W as the new model is known as features a D-sub and a DVI port with HDCP support. It lacks the HDMI input of the P243W, but it has touch sensitive control buttons on the front and a dynamic contrast ratio of 20,000:1.

Price wise you're looking at NT$11,900 which translates into €250 (£199/US$394) which is about €33 cheaper than Acers P243W, but then the trade-off is no HDMI as mentioned and a slightly lower resolution.
