WhatsApp crashes and burns again

by on03 April 2014

Probably not Facebook’s fault

Mobile messaging site WhatsApp has experienced its second major outage since being acquired by Facebook in February. Users have been reporting on Twitter that the service is either simply not working, or is slow. The problem began around on Wednesday, according to DownDetector.com, a site that monitors Web outages. WhatsApp has yet to confirm the outage on its WhatsApp Status Twitter account, and is not saying much.

Some users have reported seeing a message that reads "Sorry, our service is experiencing a problem right now. We are working on it and hope to restore the functionality shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience."

The outage appears to be regional with some areas not aware that there was a problem. WhatsApp was hit with an outage back on 22 February, just days after the Facebook acquisition. That outage lasted around 3.5 hours.

The news of the outage put a damper on WhatsApp news that it was usage was through the roof. The company on Tuesday evening announced on Twitter that it recently processed 64 billion messages in a single day, breaking its previous record high of 54 billion on New Year's Eve 2013.

WhatsApp tweeted that it processed more than 20 billion inbound (sent) messages and 44 billion outbound (received) messages by its users.
