Google's new Search page can't degrade itself for those who do not have Javascript-enabled browsers.

According to Wired the design problem breaks Google's own policy making Javascript pages work for those who do not have the code.
Google’s own suggestions for webmasters says that text browser such as Lynx to examine your site, because most search engine spiders see your site much as Lynx would.

"If fancy features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Flash keep you from seeing all of your site in a text browser, then search engine spiders may have trouble crawling your site."

Google does not have to optimise the homepage for its own spiders, but it must be annoying for the five to ten percent of net users who do not use Javascript.
