Don't talk about the iPhone

Apple's glorious iPhone application platform is being killed off because of the outfit's bizarre obsession with secrecy.

Steve Jobs has declared that developers who are designing the application platform must obey "Fight Club" rules and never talk about it. Developers are required to sign an NDA which is stricter than any oath to join a secret society or the Masons. But it is making it impossible for developers to actually produce any software, because they can't ask for any help from their mates.

It also means that developers cannot print books on the iPhone that will help others create new iPhone software without breaking the NDA. Geek meetings where code development might be discussed are formally banned by Apple, and schools might not be able to teach iPhone Application Programming classes scheduled for this fall.

The question is, what advantage is there in Apple having an NDA on code that is in the public arena?
