LG, which claims to be the world's No. 2 maker of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens, has joined the other makers of flat screen panels in announcing cuts in its production lines.

The company said that it will cut its panel output by around 10 percent until August because of weakening global demand. So far, AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics have also pulled the plug on production as market conditions continue to deteriorate faster than a cod in a Cairo fish market.

LG Display thinks that the production rate should rise again after September. What the panel makers were surprised about is that people did not want 42-inch televisions. Instead, they are more interested in smaller sets which are much affordable.
