Nail down that laptop

Verified Identity Pass, which is supposed to allow its 200,000 punters a fast access through security and immigration is in the center of a storm after details of its customers went missing.

A laptop that contains the personal information of some 33,000 customers of an airport fast-pass program was reported stolen from San Francisco International Airport on July 26.  It has since been found, but the company is still trying to find out if details were accessed.

Allison Beer of VIP said that the laptop was found in same secured room at the airport that it went missing.  Officials are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the laptop's reappearance, she said. VIP has been suspended from operating its registered traveller program under the brand name Clear, from enrolling new applicants because of the reported theft.

For a bizarre reason the data on the laptop was unencrypted. The data was secured by two levels of password protection.
