Anonabox privacy router good to go

UPDATED: Devs made false claims

We are updating this report following a community backlash and further investigation into the Anonabox Kickstarter campaign. Following a Reddit AMA session with Anonabox developers, it has become apparent that a number of claims made by the developer were unsubstantiated and/or false. A certain dose of risk is always there when dealing with crowdfunding and startups, as lack of professionalism is endemic, but nonetheless it is ultimately our responsibility to check and update reports as new information comes to light and sadly, in this case, a lot of things don't add up.

Anonabox, a tiny WiFi router that directs all data through the Tor network, protecting everything you do online, has just passed its $7,500 Kickstarter goal.

This could mean that it will go into production in January as planned. The gadget costs $45 on Kickstarter (the cheapest Early Bird Special version). The Anonabox is a doddle to set up and offers an “encryption for everyone.” All you need to do is power it up and connect it to your regular Wi-Fi router.

“The Anonabox easily encrypts Internet usage with a simple device that secures all web traffic, not just the traffic coming from one program,” the company wrote.

It does not require any software to download or configure, no login credentials, no registration, just plug it in and your network connection is encrypted. The Anonabox also allows people to use programs over Tor that never supported it before or required complicated configuration like Skype, Safari and Filezilla. The default firewall configuration protects your computer or network from outside snooping.
