Asus VivoMini SFF desktops coming to Europe

by on07 November 2014

Haswell silicon, solid state storage

Asus has a couple of new mini-PCs and the company appears to be taking a somewhat different approach compared to previous models.

The new VivoMini family is quite a bit smaller than the VivoPC series and in terms of size it is a bit closer to the Asus Chromebox. The VivoMini measures 4.9? x 4.9? x 1.7? (123x123x47mm).

Asus originally announced the VivoMini family in late September, promising to officially launch the first devices in November.

Haswell silicon, SSD storage

Since there is no room for a proper 2.5-inch drive, the VivoMini relies on solid state storage. We managed to find two SKUs so far, UN62-M014M and UN62-M016M, and both sport 128GB SSDs.

The UN62-M014M is based on the Core i3-4030U processor clocked at 1.9GHz. It features 4GB of RAM, 3 USB 3.0 ports, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac wireless, Bluetooth 4.0 and a card reader.

The UN62-M016M comes with a Core i5-4210U processor clocked at 1.7GHz and 8GB of RAM – the rest of the spec is the same.

New approach for Asus mini-PCs

The Core i3 version is priced at €439 in Austria, while the Core i5 model starts at €549 in Germany. Bear in mind that these are not official prices and the PCs are not shipping yet.

There is another thing to consider – unlike the VivoPC series, the VivoMini series ships without an operating system, so it’s halfway between a full system and a barebone, but thanks to the omission of a preinstalled OS, the VivoMini series also ends up a bit cheaper.

The first two SKUs are well specced and relatively pricey for an SFF box, but cheaper versions are on the way. Asus also has a Celeron version on the way and that particular SKU is also based on Haswell silicon in the form of a Celeron 2957U processor.
