Comcast to Throttle Internet usage

Here we go again

Comcast has said that it plans to again slow the speeds of its heaviest bandwidth users, which ironically follows a ruling by the Federal Communications Commission that Comcast violated federal laws over Net Neutrality by throttling BitTorrent transfers.

The FCC expressed concern that BitTorrent was attempting to control content by thwarting the speeds of users of BitTorrent. ISP Comcast is apparently back at it again, but this time claims that it plans to more fairly apply its bandwidth reduction. In order to keep service flowing to other customers, Comcast says it plans to impede Internet speeds for up to 20 minutes at a time to its heaviest bandwidth users.

Rather than focus on applications that are slowing traffic, Comcast said that it will determine in “nearly real time” which heavy users are causing congestion and will limit their access accordingly.

We’re not sure how this is different from throttling P2P content, since those users are likely still the heaviest bandwidth users, but time will tell.
