Seagate goes mad about storage

Be still my beating heart

Seagate has used CES to do a brand refresh and a number of storage products.

It used to be that PR agencies tasked to flog storage products to tech magazines were quickly shuffled to the work experience person, but there has been a lot more interest in the subject these days.

The Seagate Seven is a 500GB external hard drive which is 7mm thick. Seagate is particularly proud of this beastie which it released to commemorate its 35th Birthday. It is clear that its designers can teach Apple a thing or two – it has a thin but rigid steel shell so it does not bend.

It also has a $99.99 price tag which is not bad either.

Needless to say there is a lot of talk about a personal cloud, which is a more home based network storage. Western Digitial has been doing well with its fairly cheap My Cloud and Seagate is into it too.

The company claims the widest range of compatibility for device types and an app store with optional extras including BitTorrent Sync and anti-virus protection.

A single bay version is available in 3TB, 4TB and 5TB capacities, and a twin-bay edition offering RAID support at 4TB, 6TB and 8TB. Prices are to be confirmed.
In an apparent mis-step Seagate Wireless products are being sprayed with bright colours to lure the younger market into the world of wireless storage. We think it is amazing that Seagate and Western Digital has managed to get consumers interested in storage but pitching it for kids is probably taking it a little far.

The 500GB drives are capable of wireless access across desktop and mobile devices, and include a DLNA server which allows them to be used across a range of devices, including Google Chromecast.

Under Seagate’s LaCie branding is a new RAID hard drive capable of RAID 0 or 1 and offering speeds that allow field editing with Adobe Lightroom. It is designed to be bashed about and has water and dust resistance built in. The drive has two 2TB drives which act as a RAID array or a 4TB drive.

The LaCie Mirror is a 1TB hard drive with an ebony base and covered in Gorilla Glass for those who want to see their own face when they look at their storage drive.
Created by French designer Pauline Deltour, it's for people who need their desks to look stylish and you can use it to squeeze your spots when no one is looking.
