Cut the price of text books

Amazon wants to peddle its e-book reader, the Kindle, to schools in a bid to bring down the cost of text books.

Wright Ragen analyst, Tim Bueneman, said that Amazon sees a chance to cash in by marketing the Kindle to college students. Amazon was known to be looking at new models of the Kindle, but Bueneman claimed the outfit was looking at pushing one into colleges. The cost of text books, not to mention the size of the things, has been a bugaboo for university students for ages.

However, if Bueneman is correct, then it means that the Kindle will have to work out some way of delivering color content, which it cannot do at the moment. Amazon would also find itself having to pay similar prices to reprint books in its Kindle formats, as publishers see a limited market for text books and will still charge the earth.

Still, a Kindle would be a lot lighter in the school bag.
