Intel boss Brian Krzanich showed off Intel's latest RealSense 3D camera which is so small that it can be installed in smartphones.

Chipzilla is not giving out many details and Krzanich did not even demonstrate it in action, but he did say that the RealSense 3D camera has a longer detection range and a lower thermal output. Krzanich also showcased a 6-inch smartphone prototype.

The RealSense 3D camera first made an appearance at CES last year. At the time Intel said it could be integrated into tablets and enable users to produce and manipulate three-dimensional images.

Intel's RealSense 3D camera has three lenses – conventional, infrared and a laser projector.

The three lenses allow a user to adjust the focus of a photo after it is taken. Device makers can use it to build in a "touch-free interface that responds to hand, arm, and head motions as well as facial expressions," according to Intel.

It could be a godsend for those who want to make 3D objects for 3D printers but need help to create a CAD diagram.

One of the first tablets to sport it was the Dell Venue 8 7000 Series tablet, which bore a RealSense Snapshot Depth Camera, and was launched back in September.
