X360 takes flight

Samsung's
recently announced MacBook Air killer, the ultra-light 13.3-inch X360 notebook is listed on several European e-tail sites for €1599.

The slim, stylish X360 is based on Intel's Centrino 2 platform. It's powered by a Core 2 Duo SU9300 at 1.2GHz, has 4096MB of memory and a 120GB 5400rpm hard drive. Like the Air, it has no optical drive, but in case you can't live without it you can still get Lenovo's X300.

One of Air's weak spots was its lack of connectors and the Samsung team did not make the same mistake. The X360 packs 3 USBs, LAN, HDMI, PCMCIA Type II and ExpressCard/34 Slot and a 7in1 Card Reader, more than enough.

Energy efficiency is something Samsung talks about a lot, boasting up to 6 or 10 hours of endurance, depending on usage scenario and configuration. It still sounds like a cheap pre-election promise, but it must be noted that its 13.3-inch LED TFT is supposedly highly efficient, as well as the new ULV CPU. Samsung is also offering the X360 with 64 or 128GB SSDs, which should further enhance its endurance.

All in all, the X360 is an impressive machine and although not cheap, it still ends up cheaper than the Apple's Air or Lenovo's X300. Looks damn nice too.
