LCD TV sales will be flat next year

Not going to pick up next year

There is no end in sight to the slack sales of LCD TVs.

Beancounters at Trendforce have been shuffling their tarot cards and reached the conclusion that LCD TV shipments will not really pick up next year either.

Shipments of LCD TVs are only going to reach 216 million units this year  and Trendforce thinks that this figure will be  220 million next year. It is a slight increase of 1.86 percent compared to 2015 but really makes no odds to the struggling telly makers.

The only brightness in the figures is that 4K TVs will represent 23 percent of the global market next year as prices will be affordable.  It is not certain that is a good thing.

Although 4K means some people will be buying more TVs, the telly makers hoped that increased costs would pay for the technology's development. Instead they have had to discount it to get it onto the shelves.

Screen sizes, the firm said, with become larger and high resolutions will become more important.

TV sets with screen sizes of 50 inch and above represent 19.7 percent of total shipments.

Trendforce research manager Ricky Lin said the market is pretty saturated. Samsung and LG Electronics still occupy the number one and number two positions.
