Choice between integrated or discrete

Although a lot of people expected the new MacBook Pro (which features the Nvidia Geforce 9400M chipset and a Geforce 9600M GT discrete GPU) to be able to Hybrid SLI, it turns out this isn't the case. From what we understand, it all comes down to Apple's implementation, or at least that's what Nvidia is saying.

The other annoying thing is that to switch between the IGP and the discrete card, you have to select it in software and then log off and back on for the switch over to take place. Considering that modern Windows-powered notebooks doesn't require this, we're sure a lot of potential Mac buyers are disappointed.

Further bad news for those that run boot camp or similar Windows enabling software is the fact that when you're running Windows, you're stuck with the Geforce 9600M GT. This means shorter battery life, but the upside would be that you actually get better graphics performance which might be important to some.

The better life difference is about an hour between using the IGP graphics solution and the 9600M GT under Mac OS X, and it's anyone's guess how long the battery life is in Windows.

You can find Nvidia's explanation here.
