Google bakes Cast into Chrome

Video streaming made easy

Search engine outfit Google is baking its Cast software into Chrome to make it easier to beam media content to your TV.

In the bad old days, casting content from your computer to your Chromecast-equipped TV required a Chrome extension. As of Chrome 51, such an extension won't be necessary.

Chrome 51 includes a 'Cast' option within the drop-down settings menu and you can also access it through right clicking in a tab. This will then cast the current tab to the appropriate telly or monitor.

As well as integrating the Casting feature, Google has simplified the process. In earlier versions of the Cast toolbar icon extension, you had the option to set the resolution, bitrate, quality, and other features when mirroring the contents of a tab to the Cast device. These options have been removed, instead, the system will now automatically adjust the settings based on the quality of the network. Having said that we would have thought that was half the fun of trying to get your PC to stream anything without stuffing up.

Chrome 51 is now available as a stable version, and the Cast option should be rolling out to users now.
