Is your console ready to accept the upgrade?

The day of the New Xbox Experience upgrade has arrived and unless you have been living under a rock you may have thought that the day would never get here. A better question for many users would be, is your console ready to accept the update?

The biggest issue with getting the update is that you will need space on your hard drive or memory card to handle the NXE upgrade. This could especially be a problem for those who purchased the Xbox 360 Arcade system that comes with only a 256MB memory card.

To Microsoft’s credit, they have been offering low-cost 20GB hard drive upgrades to those with Arcade systems to make sure that they have enough space for the upgrade. So, if you are running low on space, we suggest that you give your hard drive or memory card a good cleaning prior to the start of the upgrade later today. The NXE upgrade will require at least 128MB of space and 144MB with the additional parts necessary to make the Netflix functionality work.

If you don’t have enough space for the upgrade to take place, it will remind you and then abort. You can continue to use your Xbox, from our understanding. At least for the time being, the only way to make sure that you don’t get the upgrade is to make sure that you don’t have enough space for it or don’t connect the console to the Internet.

As part of Microsoft’s thanks to those that participated in the testing of the NXE, Microsoft has already started to roll it out to those users. So, some users are already getting the NXE upgrade; and the feedback that we have from them is that the process is pretty painless, but can take a little while depending on your connection speed.

Opinions are still mixed as to the actual impact of the NXE upgrade. In fact, some users are put off by the entire NXE, while others have embraced it. Only time will tell how well received NXE will be; and the roll out will start today.
