Google news makes cash while reporters can't

Sites like Google News are making money, while the people creating that digital content aren't able to make a living, a Microsoft lawyer moaned.

Thomas Rubin complained that the Google news site makes $100 million a year, while the newspapers that power its content are having to cut staff in record numbers. He said that a fair business model will eventually congeal itself into existence based around advertising or some other subsidiary platform.

"Today we are still searching for healthy symbiosis between newspapers and new technology. And symbiosis it must be, for journalism and digital consumption are forevermore inextricably linked," he said.

In a speech given to the U.K. Association of Online Publishers. Rubin said that this state of affairs could not be the future of publishing. What is strange is that Microsoft essentially uses the same model with its MSNBC Newsbot. It just wasn't anywhere nearly as successful.

It seems that Rubin does not think that such schemes are bad if Microsoft is making money, but not if Google is doing it.
