Android eclipses Windows

Turn around bright eyes

In March 2017, beancounters at web-analytics company StatCounter's officially declared that Android has became a more popular operating system than Windows.

StatCounter's count does not see Android beating Windows by much. Android topped the global end-user operating system market share with 37.93 percent. That put it marginally ahead of Windows' 37.91 percent. This is well within any statistical margin of error, but even a tie indicates how far Android has come.

StatCounter's CEO Aodhan Cullen said the figure was a milestone in technology history and the end of an era.

"It marks the end of Microsoft's leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s. It also represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4 percent of global internet usage share only five years ago."

StatCounter sees it as being largely because of the rise of smartphones and the decline of PCs. The company also credits the growth of the Asian end-user market.

Windows still dominates the worldwide operating system desktop market - PC and laptop - with an 84 percent internet usage share in March.

Other web counters see Windows use declining with a battle developing between Android and iOS, at least in the US. StatCounter looks at a worldwide market where there are fewer iOS users.
