Bixby can’t learn English

Keeping it in Asia

While Samsung is telling the world+dog that its AI-based virtual assistant can do 15,000 tasks, apparently that does not include talking in English.

The launch date for Bixby has been pushed back yet again because the virtual assistant is struggling to understand English, according to the Korea Herald.

It said that Samsung could not fully release its software because it lacks data to help develop Bixby’s deep learning technology.

Samsung spokesperson said that developing Bixby in other languages is taking more time than expected mainly because of the lack of accumulation of big data.

That has not stopped Samsung hyping Bixby’s prowess since it was first formally announced in conjunction with the company’s Galaxy S8 phone in the spring.

But no one has been able to fully prove it’s better than Cortana, or Google Assistant for the simple reason that almost no one has been able to use the technology. Hell, even Donald Trump can have a stab at English, and he is smart.

The company already missed its first launch date for the English language product, which was supposed to hit in the spring.

Samsung still has plans to port the AI to other devices. Samsung is allegedly working on a smart speaker, similar to Amazon’s Echo, that is powered by Bixby – it also wants to add Bixby to the Family Hub refrigerator.
