Most cars will be autonomous in a decade

Because Musk never sleeps

Autonomous vehicles will become the norm in the auto industry within 10 years, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Speaking before the assorted throngs at the National Governor's Association, he predicted most cars produced in 2027 will come with autonomous driving capabilities that extend beyond Tesla's current Autopilot system.

By that same time point, Musk expects around half of all new vehicles to be electric.

“In 10 years, half of all production will be EV...I think almost all cars produced will be autonomous in 10 years, almost all. It will be rare to find one that is not, in 10 years,” he said.

Although the new vehicles entering the market may be autonomous, it'll take a bit longer for traditional cars to be phased out. Vehicles can last well over a decade, so it could be many years before autonomous vehicles are the most popular kind on the road.

So that even when new vehicle production switches over to electric or autonomous the vast majority of the fleet will still need gas.
