Developers get a chance to play

Google has announced the release of a SIM and hardware unlocked version of the first Android smartphone, if you are a developer.

To get an Android Dev Phone 1, you'll first need to register as an Android developer on the Android Market site, which entails a one-time setup fee of $25. Then you will have to write a check for $399 and you can have one phone per developer account.

You can buy the gear from the U.S., U.K., Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Hungary.

Google says more areas will be possible later. It is hoping that developers will stick their pens to paper and write lots of new sexy apps that will wow the great unwashed.

Of course, it could also be bought by those who pretend to be developers and who want to get their paws on the unlocked phone.
