OEM licenses available until May 30, 2009

Microsoft has issued yet again another reprieve for Windows XP. Instead of ending availability of Windows XP on January 31st as originally planned, the company has bowed to pressure, now making May 30th 2009 the last date the OEM partners will be able to purchase Windows XP.

The news is good for OEMs who have been scrambling over the last couple of months stockpiling Windows XP licenses in an effort to be able to continue meet customer demand for the operating system. Many OEMs have continued to voice their complaints to Microsoft, saying that the majority of their enterprise and business customers were not willing to purchase Windows Vista despite Microsoft’s best efforts and marketing to help the OS gain more traction and boost the adoption rate.

While Windows XP will continue to only be available in OEM packaging, customers will still be able to take advantage of Windows Vista downgrades to Windows XP, as well, with many dealers continuing to charge extra for this service. We suspect that Microsoft will enjoy good sales numbers of Windows XP during the first part of the year, while customers wait to see what Windows 7 will offer.
