Top management shake up
Tinman Michael Dell has
taken his company by the ankles and given it a good shaking. The outfit
has announced a major reorganisation of its operations on Wednesday and the
axe has fallen in the necks of two top executives.
Instead of a regional
organisation, Dell said his company will organise itself globally around four
major customer segments. These are large enterprise, public sector,
small and medium businesses and consumer products. In a press release Dell
said that the four groups best capitalise on the company's competitive
advantages, while strengthening execution and synergies."
While the use
of the word synergy in a press release should be enough of a crime for a
press officer to be liberally doused in petrol and set on fire, the word
execution is probably valid. Executed will be Mike Cannon, president of
global operations, will 'retire' in January 31 and be replaced by Jeff Clarke
who will serve as vice chairman for global operations and head the business
client product group.
Mark Jarvis will step down as chief marketing
officer and be replaced by Erin Nelson, vice president of marketing for Dell
Europe, Middle East and Africa. It is not clear if these departures
are anything to do with Michael's shake-up Dell chairman and chief
executive Michael Dell said in the past two years Dell had
significantly improved its competitiveness, reengineered our supply chain
and broadened its product portfolio.
This was enough to move from a
global business that's run regionally to businesses that are really
globally organised.
