HP has announced a new addition to its Mini-series with the Mini 2140, although this time it's powered by an Intel Atom processor rather than a VIA C7-M which is likely to make some people happy. HP has also upgraded the screen to a 10.1in 16:9 model, although you can choose between 1,024x576 or 1,366x768 resolution.

Other neat features that you won't find on most netbooks include an Express Card 54 slot, a special powered USB 2.0 port which we presume works with an external HP optical drive and an optional 80GB SSD drive.

Standard features include the choice between a 5,400 or 7,200rpm 160GB hard drive, 1-2GB of DDR2 memory, two USB ports (including the powered one), an SD card slot, a D-sub connector, Gigabit Ethernet, a choice of WiFi options including 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.0 and the choice between a 3 or 6-cell battery.

The base model should cost US$499 (€375/£340), but we'd expect that price to increase quickly with the SSD option. The choice of operating systems includes FreeDOS, SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, Windows XP Home or Professional and Windows Vista Home Basic 32 or Business 32.
