Still to be involved in major strategic decisions

Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that he will step away from Apple with a leave of absence until June in an effort to focus on his health. Tim Cook will run the show at Apple in Jobs’s absence.

The news comes on the heels of Jobs’s recent announcement that he was having some complex health issues and needed to take time to focus on them. Jobs claims that his health issues continue to be a distraction not only to him and his family, but to the company, as well.

The news came in the form of an Email sent to Apple employees with the announcement that Jobs, even though absent, will continue to be involved in “major strategic decisions.” We believe this news was announced to help investors get over the possibility that Jobs would be leaving the company. It seems to have had little effect, however, as trading of Apple stock has been halted for the time being.

With Jobs trying to get out of the limelight and Cook at the helm, investors may start to get cold feet, as many of them may not feel confident in Cook’s ability to continue the string of success that Jobs has had over the past couple of years.

The announcement at least gives the Apple fanatics some time to get used to the idea of an Apple without Jobs at the helm. We think that it is hard to tell (based on the information that has been released) how truly serious Jobs’s condition is and how much a good six months off will really do to combat the cause of the problem.

We wish Jobs the best and we hope to see him back on the job in six months; but based on what we have been reading, this alone might be a tall order. The computer and electronics industry is certainly more interesting to cover with Jobs being involved in it.
