Not much change from Vista then

Detailed information with regards to the various Windows 7 SKUs have made its way online thanks to Engadget among others and the information have been confirmed with Microsoft and should as such be the real deal.

So what do we have to look forward to? Well, first of all there will be a Windows 7 Starter version, this one will only ship with new PCs and it's limited to running only 3 simultaneous applications, which seems a bit odd to us, and it lacks the Aero UI.

Next up is Windows 7 Home Basic which will only be available in emerging markets and is again missing the Aero UI. Then there's Windows 7 Home Premium which will be available worldwide in both a retail packaged version and in OEM. This version features the Aero UI and it has support for multi-touch. It also comes with "premium" games whatever that means, media capabilities (Media Center, DVD playback etc.) and it allows you to create home network groups.

The next two versions seem to target business users, as both Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise has a lot of features that most home users wouldn't need such as remote desktop host, domain support, presentation mode etc. However, the Enterprise version also adds features such as being able to boot from a virtual drive, BitLocker data encryption and something called branch cache. The Professional version will be available in both retail and OEM versions while the Enterprise version is only available to volume license customers.

Finally there will be an Ultimate version that offers all features of Windows 7, although this is meant to have a limited retail and OEM availability. We're not sure why this would be the case, except possibly for the simple reason that it'll be very expensive.

So far no pricing details have been revealed, let's just hope Windows 7 will be cheaper than Windows Vista, but it's unlikely.
