Digital encryption going for a song

Digital encryption technology company Certicom has been acquired by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion for $2.41 a share. Certicom has about 43.7 million shares outstanding so the deal is worth about $105.1 million.

Share price is cheap, but not as cheap as the hostile bid price that RIM had put on Certicom at the start.  However the deal became a bidding war with Internet infrastructure company VeriSign and the price went up. In the end Verisign gave up. The deal is subject to court and shareholder approval.

Certicom was born in 1985 under the handle Mobius Encryption.  It makes encryption technology for wireless communications.
