Dell expands US recycling program

GREY BOX shifter Dell expanded its US electronics recycling network to more states and began an online gadget trade-in program. Punters can bring used computers and other electronics to Goodwill shops in 18 states. Bits that are OK are resold and devices in need of repair are either refurbished or broken down to salvage as scrap.

Goodwill uses people with disabilities to test, refurbish or strip down devices. Susanne Fredericks of Goodwill said the Dell partnership created jobs while stopping electronic waste ending up on rubbish dumps.

The scheme started in Texas and has resulted in 50 million pounds of electronic equipment have been recycled. Dell has also uploaded an web based exchange exchange tool which will letting people easily calculate trade-in value of used electronics and ship them to redeem Dell gift cards.
