Fake error message acts as bait

Facebookers
are faced with a new security threat in the form of a application which poses as a system error warning. The app seems to be spreading like butter on toast, Sophos security experts have described it as sneaky, and here's why.

It displays a message claiming one of your friends has trouble accessing you profile, saying he or she "has faced some errors when checking your profile View The Errors Message." Of course, acting on it just installs malware and your mates start getting the same messages.

The application has the potential to steal personal information, but there's no evidence that it's doing so. It is also a threat to non-Facebook members, as googling for its "Error Check System" will yield you several links to malware ridden sites.

Sophos is warning Facebook users to be more careful when installing third party apps. If you were already suckered into installing it, you can easily remove it using Facebook's Edit tab in the Applications section.
