500GB to 1TB

Seagate has officially unveiled its 1TB consumer drive and it is part of its new Barracuda 7200.11 series of hard drives. At the same time Seagate also launched the Barracuda ES.2 which is the SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) version of the same drive.

The Barracuda 7200.11 will come in 500, 750GB and 1TB capacities. It will have 16 or 32MB of cache and a SATA-300 interface. Seagate claims a sustained transfer speed of 105MB/s for these drives, which is a very impressive number indeed.

All three drives are using perpendicular recording and the 1TB drive is only using four disks with eight heads.

The new drives should be out some time next quarter and the 7200.11 will be priced at US$399.99, just as every other 1TB drive.
