Use too much juice

The California
Energy Commission is looking to set the first mandatory energy limits on television sets and it is starting to look like many LCD and Plasma TVs don't meet the proposed regulations.

Energy commission officials claims that the reason for the proposed new rules is because large Plasma and LCD TVs use a massive amount of energy. A 42-inch Plasma TV uses more energy than a large refrigerator, and the Commision says that is too much.  It wants to cut TV power consumption by half because of their huge strain on electricity.

The proposals do not ban any particular type of TV, but restricts the amount of juice a particular TV consumes. On the plus side the regulations will help a consumer save between $18 and $30 a year on their electricity bill. On the negative side they will not get to see television on a super huge screen.

The energy commission is expected to vote this summer on the regulations, and if passed, would take effect in 2011 to 2013.
