According
to Gartner beancounters, global PC shipments in Q1 2009 totaled 67.2 million units, a 6.5 percent decline year-on-year.

George Shiffler, research director at Gartner, claims channel inventory is restocking, especially in the US, but that this should not be interpreted as a sign of recovery in demand. "It is still unclear if the global PC market has hit the bottom," says Shiffler.

HP is still in the lead, while Dell and Acer are battling for the second position in the PC market, and they're separated by just 0.1 percentage points. PC shipments in the States were down 0.3 percent sequentially, and were stronger than expected, mainly thanks to growth in the netbook segment.

The EMEA market saw a double digit decline, with a total of 22.7 million units shipped, a 10.2 percent decline year-on-year. The professional segment was more affected by the crisis than the consumer market.

Asia-Pacific shipments were down 5.5 percent compared to Q1 2008, for a total of 18.2 million units. In Latin America, shipments went down 12.4 percent over the same period. Japan swallowed up 3.6 million PCs, a decline of 3.8 percent.
